Protoface vs. Spatius

Protoface offers premium cloud-rendered avatars with less technical build-out, while Spatius is slightly cheaper but requires client-side rendering.

Two affordable real-time AI avatar platforms

Protoface and Spatius both make real-time avatars accessible at pricing far below many premium avatar platforms. The main difference is architectural.

Protoface converts an agent’s audio into finished real-time avatar video. Spatius sends motion data to its AvatarKit SDK, which then renders a 3D Gaussian Splatting avatar locally on the user’s device. That choice affects integration effort, device requirements, visual consistency, and cost—not just the price per minute. Quality and setup

Quality and Setup

Protoface is designed for teams that want to add a high-quality face to an existing voice agent without building a client-side rendering pipeline. Teams can create custom faces from a single image in seconds, access them through the API, and integrate with LiveKit, Pipecat, Vapi, Agora, ElevenLabs Agents, OpenAI Realtime, and VideoSDK. Protoface reports sub-300ms latency and a roughly five-minute setup process.

Spatius takes an edge-rendering approach. Its cloud service converts audio into motion data, while its AvatarKit SDK loads and renders the avatar on the end user’s device. Spatius says this works on web, iOS, Android, and entry-level chipsets without a dedicated GPU.

That architecture can be valuable for mobile, kiosk, embedded, and low-bandwidth deployments. However, it also gives the product team more client-side responsibility. Developers must account for local model loading, graphics performance, device compatibility, battery and thermal behavior, and rendering across different hardware. Spatius provides quickstarts and platform integrations, but its documentation describes multiple SDK, rendering, authentication, and transport paths. Relative to receiving finished avatar video, this generally means more technical build-out and device-level QA.

Model approach

Spatius uses 3D Gaussian Splatting, or 3DGS, to represent and render its avatars. The model lives on the client device and is animated using motion data sent from the cloud. Spatius says its single-image Gaussian pipeline can produce a custom avatar in a few hours.

Protoface uses newer, non-Gaussian models designed for faster custom avatar creation and higher visual fidelity. A custom Protoface can be generated from an image in seconds rather than requiring a multi-hour avatar pipeline.

The practical distinction is less about whether Gaussian rendering can run in real time—it can—and more about what teams want to optimize. Spatius prioritizes low bandwidth and local rendering. Protoface prioritizes premium output, rapid avatar generation, and a managed video experience that behaves consistently across client devices.

Cost and scalability

Spatius is cheaper, although the difference is much narrower than the gaps seen with many premium avatar providers.

Spatius lists monthly rates of $0.009 per minute on several plans and $0.007 per minute on its $299 Scale plan. Its annual Scale plan lists an effective rate of $0.0056 per minute. Protoface lists $0.01 per additional minute on its Launch and Scale plans. At the commonly advertised monthly rates, Spatius is therefore about 30% cheaper—not several times cheaper.

The tradeoff is that some of Spatius’s infrastructure savings come from moving rendering work onto the customer’s application and the end user’s hardware. Teams should therefore compare total implementation and operating requirements, not only the per-minute API rate.

For products with hundreds of thousands of minutes, the difference can still matter. For many teams, however, paying $0.01 instead of $0.007 per minute may be a reasonable trade for reduced client-side complexity, faster custom avatar generation, and more predictable rendering across devices.

Company and procurement considerations

Protoface is US-based, with its terms governed by California law. Spatius is operated by SPATIALWALK PTE. LTD., a company incorporated and headquartered in Singapore. This is not inherently an advantage or disadvantage for either platform, but company jurisdiction can matter to enterprise buyers evaluating contracting, support, compliance, and vendor-review requirements.

Best fit

Protoface is the stronger fit for teams that want premium real-time avatars without requiring local avatar rendering. It combines fast image-to-avatar creation, finished video output, broad voice-agent integrations, low latency, and pricing that remains close to edge-rendered alternatives.

Spatius is a compelling option for products where low bandwidth, native mobile support, embedded hardware, or on-device rendering are core requirements. Its architecture can reduce provider-side costs and work well on constrained networks, provided the team is comfortable owning more of the client rendering stack.

For most web-based voice agents, consumer applications, support products, tutors, coaches, and products that need to generate many custom faces quickly, Protoface offers the more practical balance of quality, simplicity, and cost.
